About Black is Beautiful

Thomas builds stunning collage-like images full of colour. The subjects are portrayed in complex compositions where the artist merges materials, textures, sensuality, beauty and power. Thomas’ work includes images of African-American women of the seventies. She uses images from  the pin-up calendars from the 1970's called Jet: Beauties of the Month. These were advertised as the first “black is beautiful” calendars. They were a spin-off from the weekly Jet magazine. Its Wikipedia page describes its weekly content thus: The result is a striking project that celebrates the beauty and femininity of black women, so often dismissed or ignored.
