The Story

First edition  first impression paperback with dustjacket in new condition. Please note all text is in German.

What do we see when we see a photographic image? The photographer Verena von Gagern-Steidle (*1946 in Bonn, lives and works in Rottal) created a complex body of work over a period of around 50 years, while always questioning the medium. In the 1980s, for example, she made the Polaroid series irretrievably disappear under layers of gold and silver: the photographer became an alchemist. Everyday reality found by Gagern-Steidle frequently photographed. Her poetic gaze focuses on landscape and architecture, people and space. Only once does she show herself to the camera: in her own wedding dress, she plays with clichés and talks about being an artist and a woman. Further series of works are dedicated to nature, which teaches us its lessons.
