The Story
About Jim's Terrible City (J.G. Ballard and Shanghai)
James H. Bollenâs photographs are inspired by the legendary British writer J. G. Ballard (1930- 2009), and Ballardâs semi-autobiographical novel 'Empire of the Sun'. Ballard was born in Shanghai in 1930 in what was then known as the International Settlement. Through extensive readings of Ballardâs highly visual fiction, Bollen explores a literary exhibition and heritage of Shanghai with his own painterly photographic language.About James H. Bollen
Forging real and imagined collaborations between artists, James Bollen delivers fantastically fresh photography. Bollen cites his litany of imagined collaborations ranging from the traditional Japanese school painter, Ogata Korin, to influential American film director Stanley Kubrick. Both of these artists can be seen reflected in Bollenâs work; from the impactful colours he chooses to capture â similar to the floral palette used by Korin â to the philosophy his work seems to emote, so closely mirrored by that of Kubrick who was once quoted as saying: âThe essence of a dramatic form is to let an idea come over people without it being plainly stated. When you say something directly, it is simply not as potent as it is when you allow people to discover it for themselvesâŠâ This dialogue seems particularly potent when considering a piece of Bollenâs work; his photographs do not immediately render all their secrets, instead, they wait for you to uncover their many layersâŠRelated links
