For her series “Overtime” (runner-up for the 2022 Aperture Portfolio Prize), Russian-born and Kyiv-based photographer Margo Ovcharenko spent several years – four football seasons – with the women in a football boarding school on the outskirts of Moscow. Taking a documentary approach, her photographs capture the community and kinship of the women, their powerfulness, the hardships and wounds of their chosen path, and the contrasting scenery of the industrial suburban landscape that surrounds them. Though never directly addressed, themes like queerness, love, feminity and identity linger throughout the series.
