It was 1957 and Parks, commissioned by Life magazine, was working on a series of essays about crime in America. His perspective was unique on this topic; Parks rejected the racist and classist clichés of delinquency, drug use and violence. In fact, he had an approach based on the social and economical factors that can actually be linked to criminal behaviour. As a result, The Atmosphere of Crime, 1957 presents a sophisticated essay that cinematically portrays a world nobody wants to look at. That of violence, corruption and social rejection. The images in Parks' books are powerful and poetic, embedded in a striking aesthetic fuelled with empathy. This book contains a great selection of never-seen-before photographs from Parks' original reportage.  

About Gordon Parks

Gordon Parks (Nov 30, 1912 – March 7, 2006) was an American photographer, musician, writer and film director, who became prominent in U.S. documentary photojournalism in the 1940s through 1970s—particularly in issues of civil rights, poverty and African-Americans—and in glamour photography. Parks was the first African American to produce and direct major motion pictures—developing films relating the experience of slaves and struggling black Americans, and creating the "blaxploitation" genre. He is best remembered for his iconic photos of poor Americans during the 1940s (taken for a federal government project), for his photographic essays for Life magazine, and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Parks also was an author, poet and composer.
